I'm sure there are many plans available online for boats downlaod. We will never have a shortage of anything downloadable these days.

But getting the most out of boat plans available online, you must ensure that if the boat plans you buy is the plan most appropriate for you.

But then, how do you know? Excellent question, I would say.

I strongly suggest you ask some specific questions to determine whether the boat plan is for you. Some questions you might ask in advance are:

* How much are you willing to spend to build your boat?

Of course, you have an idea how much you can actually spend. But try to have a specific amount, as this will help plan things like the size and materials for your boat.

* What type of boat you intend to build? What are the dimensions of the boat you want?

To answer this, you must have a clear idea about the purpose of the boat. Will you use it on marshes or shallow water? Or maybe open seas? Do you think this is an engine for outfitting or will they be used for sailing or rowing?

These questions will determine the type of boat you're going to build, and its equipment.

* What materials do you want to build your boat?

I strongly suggest a first time boat builder to use wood. marine plywood specifically as it is easier to handle and certainly one of the cheapest materials to use. However, if you have some experience in welding and the money is not a problem, aluminum boats are also an option. Fiberglass is also one of the best materials around if it is not as readily available and more expensive than wood.

* What is your level of expertise?

There are many plans online vessel that promises an easy job, even for first-time boat builder. And I do agree that there is such a thing. A core competence in woodworking should be able to do the job especially if it is a little glue and the type of boat plans.

However, do not get too carried away by such promises. Not all online boat plans are created equal. You should exercise due diligence. You must ensure that the plan offers a step by step instruction and pictures to make it easier to follow.
