Boat Registration NumbersNautical Tutor - boat registration and identification number of the shell

If you own a motorboat, must be registered, regardless of the state of principal use. In addition, some other boats must be registered.

To register your boat, you'll need the hull identification number (TIN). It is a serial number of 12 characters located on the rear starboard (right). NIC indicates the manufacture of boats, its serial number and month and year of production.

When your boat is registered, you are issued a certificate of number (registration) and certificate of ownership. Each state has different frequencies for the renewal of renewal. Renewal is required in some states, after a year. Others require renewal after three years. There are also various taxes related to the issuance of the certificate number.

The certificate number is issued by different offices in different states. For example, in the State of Alabama certificate number is issued by the office of judge of probate or license commissioner in the county of the owner of the boat. In the State of Alaska and California, you get the certificate number of Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Registration is handled by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles in the State of Florida. Check with your state for details on how to obtain your certificate number of the required fee, the renewal periods and other rules applied.

When successful registration, you will be issued a certificate of number of boats and physical sticker. The number of boats and sticker must be affixed on both sides of the bow, three-inch high block letters with a color that contrasts with the color of your boat. The spaces or hyphens should be between the numbers and letters. For example: FC 4321 or FC-4321 BX-BX.

Your registration must be kept on board the ship at any time. Consider the store in a dry-bag to protect it from water.

To avoid unnecessary penalties be sure to have your boat properly marked and the registration board.

Large recreational boats can be federally registered with the U.S. Coast Guard and therefore are generally exempted from the requirement to be registered with the State of principal use.

All states follow the regulations reciprocity that allows ships to operate in U.S. waters for a period of time (usually 90 days), even if they are registered in another state. Finally, you must transfer your registration to the state of principal use.
