HISTORY OF MR. Joseph Pilates

Mr. Pilates was a remarkable man born in a small town near Dusseldorf, Germany, December 9, 1880. At five years, he lost sight in his left eye. This is probably due to a stone thrown by thugs. He was skinny, sick child who suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. The older bullies accuses him of "Pontius Pilate, killer of Christ". It was this event that started his journey to life and physical health.

He has studied both Eastern and Western forms of exercise, including yoga, Zen, and ancient Greek and Roman systems. When he was 14, he had developed his body so he was able to model anatomical. He also mastered at boxing, gymnastics, skiing and diving.

In 1912 he went to England for training boxing again. He found a job as a circus performer. In 1914, he became a star, and has been on tour - he and his brother Frederick made as Roman gladiators!

After World War I broke one, he was interned in a camp in Lancaster in the United Kingdom because of his nationality. He taught wrestling and self-defense, and began refining and teaching his system of work floor exercises. He was transferred to another camp on the Isle of Man, where he began to assist patients in the infirmary of the year.

Bed rest is a normal prescription at the time Joseph took the springs from beds and sails up to the bedposts of exercise equipment. The origins of modern Pilates Reformer resistance spring and sliding carriage, the Wunda Chair, Pilates and ring are in equipment that Joseph developed during this period.

Patients were able to stay in bed as required, but can still work on their strength and flexibility of working against the resistance of springs. When the influenza epidemic of 1918 "has swept the world, none of the patients were sick of Joe. He had become a "nurse-physiotherapist, with a revolutionary approach to therapeutic exercise.

When the war ended, Joe returned to Germany and began training the Hamburg Military Police in self-defense, he also had personal customers. In 1923, when he was 40, he was invited to form the new German army, but he disagreed with the German policy, he decided to leave and move to the U.S. While enroute for America Joe met his wife Clara. She was a kindergarten teacher who was suffering from arthritis pain, Joe has worked to heal during their journey by boat and they marry. When they arrived in New York, they took more of a boxing gym at 939 Eighth Ave. The gymnasium has been in the same building as several dance studios and rehearsal rooms, and that's Pilates exercises joined with dancers and actors. Joseph and Clara were both friend and teacher to many dancers and choreographers reputations, many dancers who needed help with injuries were sent to Joe and Clara's studio.
Although Pilates is a guru of health, he liked cigars, whiskey and women. The 87 year old Joseph Pilates died in 1967 of advanced emphysema from smoking cigars for too many years.

MODERN DAY PILATES

After his death, his wife, Clara continued with the studio until the end of his life 10 years later, in 1977.

The name of Pilates lived by a man named Ron Fletcher. He was a dancer who was sent to Joseph to help a knee injury. They spent time together assign work on the Reformer and other equipment invented by Joseph. During a period of recovery from alcoholism, Ron has worked closely with Clara Pilates, and then opening his own studio in Beverly Hills, which has attracted many famous actors and dancers. Clara was impressed, and gave permission for the name of Pilates.

Ron's workshop was the first to introduce a course certified Body Contrology in the early 80s, the first CERT.
