Just bought a 1982 Kawasaki Jet Ski JS550 did not run in 8 years What do I do first? So, I just bought a 1982 Kawasaki Jet Ski JS550 has been stored for 8 years and has not been raced since. What should I do first to make it work? and how much it costs to make it a runner?
This is what I know needs
missing gas cap, battery, and exhaust downpipes
Where can I find them?
you can get them at your local marina, the first thing you need to do is mas sure the gas is drained and run new gas through it
They are the original thing, with a long and fruitful. It may be adjusted to have a round plate, scoop intake and turbine already mounted - a few steps that improved handling is great, on shares. If the engine hose replacement / other mods that can complicate things a bit. The pieces are rather difficult to find off the shelf at the local level, but any dealer should be able to find stuff for you and order it - Kawasaki are very good when it comes to parts older models, which is a model of the icon that has sold tens of thousands over the years ..
The first thing to do is a workshop manual. You can get a lot of good intentions (and some less) advice online, but the manual is the bible. No, they are not free, check your local library.
For marine engine sitting at this moment it is a restoration, not just a household. Assume that the turbine water pump and carby needs service - the fuel tank flushing (no plug!) What about the engine is very dry internally. After dealing with the turbine and cleaning and / or reconstruction of carbohydrates take the candles and generously injected two-stroke oil into the cylinders, soak and spin the engine by hand to coat the bores and to introduce the lubricant in the end - the manual shows how. The plugs must be replaced and should not turn the engine over without plugs installed and the ignition switch and complete - Beware of fuel leaks and look for leaks water on the first some running. Make sure that nothing in the turbine drive before starting the engine over.
