Sailing New York

I am interested in learning to sail. After that, I would like to take this experience to sail from New York to Florida in the Caribbean.

I am not the hard core - I do not want to do without a couple of engines, a lot of practice, and safety equipment. My question is, what kind of boat - which is not too expensive - would be best suited for this purpose?

And where can I go online to start learning about what I need to learn?

I learned to surf in Oceanside CA on a 14 bit Lido. Stick with small boats (26 feet or less) to learn. They are much more sensitive to wind and you have to watch everything.
